New Klezmer Trio - Masks and Faces (1996)

"Ben Goldberg was a pupil of the eminent clarinetist Rosario Mazzeo, and studied with Steve Lacy and Joe Lovano. In 1991, long before the downtown jewish music revival, Goldberg’s group New Klezmer Trio took a slightly different view of the klezmer tradition and expanded it through a jazz-improv idiom. Their CD Masks and Faces was listed as one of the ten best recordings of 1992 by Cadence magazine, and as The San Francisco Chronicle noted, it "kicked open the door for radical experiments with Ashkenazi roots music". John Zorn, in creating his Masada projects, was heavily influenced by the recordings of New Klezmer Trio and therefore re-released this record in 1996". (An assortment of internet reviews)

"A recording the Ewings can't get enough of" (The Dallas Review)

Ben Goldberg - clarinet
Dan Seamans - bass
Kenny Wollesen - drums

yes, lucky. this album is usually considered as the beginning of the jewish revival scene, and Zorn himself acknowledges his debt towards Masks and Faces. However, in my opinion, this is much more of a jazz recording (and an excellent one, for that matter) than a klezmer adventure. There are, of course, some klezmophonic elements, including some well-known tunes, but the final result is, I think, clearly outside that field. Similarly, some of the Masada output sounds much closer to Ornette than to any Jewish legacy. I'm not trying to completely deny such references; but maybe the Jewish hype is more of a commercial strategy and/or imagetic frame than anything else.
But I'll let you judge it by yourself.

Maybe this is a good opportunity to issue a REQUEST.
The Ewings would be much appreciated if someone could share other Ben Goldberg recordings.
(Except: Twelve Minor - now available at Lucky's Avant -, Light at the Crossroads, 8 Phrases, and Short for Something - which we may be posting sometime in the future).
Much obliged,
Sue Ellen

masada of course owes much more to ornette than to klezmorim - even the line-up is exactly like the classic coleman quartet. the harmonies of the tunes, on the other side, are held in that 'jewish style' - don't know what it's called, but there's a name for it, like 'pentatonic' or something similar.

goldberg - i only have 'eight phrases for jefferson rubin' in by bin.

i'll stay tuned...

cheers!

and thx for your great 'clippings' - much fun to look at!!

thanks a lot, "lucko". that seems to be a very interesting forum. unfortunately, I can not find my way around there. i guess my russian is a little rusty these days...

Well, it's not only a matter of the rustiness of one's russian... To display the download links, one needs to get registered there. Luckily I am registered, so I could copy you the link here:
http://ifolder.ru/3280310
However, for downloading from Ifolder, you would need some further Russian. If you cannot make your way with the help of babelfish.altavista.com or the google translation engine, just try to keep looking out for links saying сюда. If all this doesn't work, give me a notice, and I'll upload it to mediafire or massmirror or rapidshare...

Sorry I missed this one. Will you be re-uploading?

bravo juju said...

We will. But it may take some time; there are so many re-up requests to attend already...
