V/A - 2nd Juju Anniversary: A Lucky Selection

Mr. Lucky is a veteran in the trade of music-blogging and sonic-sharity. He has created, murdered and survived no less than 13 music blogs since 2006, such as Orang Aural, Squeezo, Cut-Out, Border Music, Infinity in Sound, Cineville, Mr. Lucky and a thousand others, endowing the sharosphere with a million sounds of his choice just for the love of humanity. Currently he is profitably running a psychic hut for the mystic misfits of our era, his longest venture so far.

Mr. Lucky was not only an inspiration for the creation of Bravo Juju but has also been a supporter, an ally and a friend of the Ewing Clan almost since day one. We were thus very happy when one of his secretaries informed us that Mr. Lucky had accepted our little challenge: to make a selection of some of the music he had enjoyed the most in the Bravo catalogue for the past two years, and create a compilation to mark the anniversary - no limits whatsoever. But one needs limits, of course, and Lucky decided to restrict his selection to artists he discovered here over this 2-year span. In the end, he produced a fine, diverse, and very personalized collection of 16 tracks, to which he was also kind enough to add a brilliant cover.

We can't think of a better way to celebrate two years of Jujuness than to invite one of our readers/listeners to offer us this sort of selection/feedback. A warm thank you to Lucky for all the work.
There are no plans to murder J.R. yet.

Bravo Juju's First Anniversary _ 08.08.2008

365 days pumping the most refined SOMA oil into the international markets
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear All;

Today, the 8th of August of 2008, marks an important ephemerid we must celebrate, for it is the 1st anniversary of Bravo Juju!
Nowadays we face, as never before, the unstable forces of the market, we're bound to cruel enslavement as we have never been before, the oil-dollar governs contemporary society and will continue to rule and shamelessly devour our earth...
In order to succeed and endure in this oily-monster-machine we call world we have to consume a certain oil, and this oil is SOMA oil!
The U.S.A. are going to have a serious impact on our global future, as we all know...
Obama or McCain?!!? No!! We at Bravo Juju support none of these candidates. In the great "indecision" 2008 U.S. of A. elections, we support the incredible J.R. Ewing for President of the United States, for he's different from all other politicians. He represents the archetype of infinite success, honor, universal love and peace among all the nations of our beloved blue and green planet!
His political ideas serve the highest values of true democracy, stoic morality, freedom, justice, humanity, ecology and Love.
J.R.'s political ideas are directly concerned with a broad platform of serious social concerns such as: the creation of a free and universal health care system, of a free and universal education system, the promulgation of anti-liberalist laws and strong financial incentives to enterprises/companies & industries with radical socialist economic policies, the creation of heavy taxes for multimillionaire individuals and companies, the eradication of world poverty and hunger, the enforcement of the Kyoto agreement & the creation of worldwide non-polluting alternative energy systems, etc... . Even if you're not American, to support J.R. For president is to act consciously for our future, in favor of our grandsons and towards a healthier planet!

To musically celebrate this unique campaign and also Bravo's 1st anniversary, nothing more adequate than the classical electroacoustic recreation of Dante Alighieri's - The Divine Comedy -, a timeless literary piece of knowledge, by Francophone composers Bernard Parmegiani (hell) and François Bayle (purgatory and earthly paradise).
The piece is narrated by Michel Hermon and follows the actual main scenes of Dante's Divine Comedy.

As we enter the dawning of a "new era"(?!º"=#?) it's useful to look back portraying or longing for new perspectives to timeless classics like this one!

The Ewings at Bravo Juju sincerely wish to thank all of our friends, collaborators and users for this first year of continued support!!
We do hope to continue to celebrate and share our life with all of you!!!

Long Live the SOMA Oil!!

J.R. for President!!

The Ewings; Now-where-land, 8th of August of 2008.

Bernhard Günter - Slow Gestures / Cérémonie Désir (1999)

"Anybody who has ever become really involved in listening to a piece of music, looking at a painting, or reading a book, will have noticed that our subjective time is not feeling the same as the chronometrical time our watch shows.

In my work as a composer I have often found that listeners believed a shorter piece to last longer than an actually longer one, and that their estimates of the duration of a work were often quite far from the actual chronometrical one.

These considerations together with the interest I have taken in neurological research into our perception of time have led me to devise a new time unit for measuring the duration of my musical works. Said research has found that our perception of "present", "now", "the present moment" is a time window of about three seconds, everything else is memory or anticipation.
So my new time unit is three seconds long, and I call it DIM, which stands for the french expression "durée; içi, maintenaint" (duration: here, now).

From now on, I will give the duration of my works expressed in numbers of this unit:
slow gestures / cérémonie désir (for heike) : 464.3 DIM
With this new time value, you will know how many "moments" of your attention/consciousness each of my works is asking for".
__________________________________________________________

Slow Gestures / Cérémonie Désir (for Heike) 464.3 DIM

"It is very difficult for me to speak of this work, since it is getting very close to my goal of creating a kind of language free space. I thus prefer to let it go without further comment other than that I dedicate it to my companion Heike - each gesture is both speaking of her, and speaking to her, without words".

Composed, recorded and mastered by Bernhard Günter at Trente Oiseaux, 1999.

Martin Tétreault - Des Pas et Des Mois (1990)

"Des Pas et Des Mois was Montreal turntablist Martin Tétreault’s first record, and still remains his most enjoyable project. This CD contains two suites, “Des Pas” (“Footsteps”) and “Des Mois” (“Months”). The first one is written and performed with guitarist René Lussier. It follows a young couple learning to dance the tango and the cha-cha-cha from records in order to participate in local competitions. The material used for these fifteen short movements mostly come from such dance instructional and self-improvement records, all in french. Tétreault applies his techniques of cut-up records and mixed storylines from different sources. Lussier brings in a handful of melodies that could have been found on his Le Trésor de la Langue or Le Corps de l’Ouvrage. Between the suites are two short pieces illustrating two of Tétreault’s key techniques: the three-in-one (three slices from different records pasted together) and the skid.

Then comes “Des Mois,” written with drummer Michel F Côté, and also featuring Lussier and clarinetist Robert Marcel Lepage. This suite relies less heavily on humor: Côté’s complex textural arrangements bring another dimension to the music, but Tétreault’s incredibly cheesy record collection delivers a few more surprises (especially on Juin). The first suite is similar in style (with the addition of Lussier’s touch) to Tétreault’s cassette Snipettes, while the second one drifts closer to the first Bruire (Michel F. Côté’s project) album Le barman a Tort de Sourire. In any case, Des Pas et Des Mois remains one of Ambiances Magnétiques’ strangest, funniest and finest moments".
