V/A - State of the Union (1992)

STATE OF THE UNION

A Collection of 68 short works curated by Elliott Sharp. Avant, Jazz, Rock, Noise, and all the Downtown space between. A good overview of what (some) Popular Music sounded like before the bloody 90s.

Christian Marclay + Otomo Yoshihide - Moving Parts (2000)

Performer, sculptor, and sound artist Christian Marclay has been experimenting with phonograph records and turntables, applying the constructs of hip-hop to avant-garde sound art deconstruction since 1979. Having teamed up with Japanese turntablist and guitar player Otomo Yoshihide for their collaboration Moving Parts, the two continue in their ongoing quest to evolve music and sound far beyond anything that is even remotely accessible to a mainstream audience. Moving Parts is a ravenous bricolage of plunderphonics, pulling sounds from cut-up and reassembled records and the turntable itself. Even with all the noise, Moving Parts succeeds on a heady plane of association where, as Marshall McLuhan would definitely state, "the medium is the message."
Juxtaposing Hawaiian guitars, gas being released from valves, faint carnival noises, and double-bass pluckings, Marclay and Yoshihide assemble these harsh noises with the elegance of impressionist painters. And that is truly how they might imagine themselves, painting subtle pictures that change with each viewing depending on the angle and distance with which they are seen. Moving Parts toys with the endless possibility of chance and takes the greatest pleasure in knowing that listeners will either passionately love and/or actively hate listening to this record. Christian Marclay, Ikue Mori, Elliott Sharp - Acoustiphobia (2000)

"The works in this collection are from an evening celebrating the third year of the Sonic Arts program at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Collectively, the artists represented on this CD encounter sound, engage architecture, articulate a building and ultimately create a sound walk for their audience. This document reveals emerging movements toward sonic portraiture, elaborate and sometimes whimsical sculptural multi-channel diffusions, and re-re- and recording practices." Lauren Weigner & Doug Henderson

"On the first Acoustiphobia disc, we'll listen to Christian Marclay, a veteran turntablist, joining forces with Ikue Mori's drum machine and electronics, as well as Elliott Sharp's guitarbass, saxophone, and electronics. The sounds that emerge from the mix often have a distorted, eerie character. Reverberant held tones waft off into pitch-shifted whirs and punchy thuds. One can make out Sharp's guitar in many passages simply on the basis of its heavy string overtones; likewise, his saxophone playing emerges clearly because of its reediness. But those instruments merge with the electronics and the turntables into a dynamic pastiche of sound whose original connection with its sources remains nebulous. Thank god for stereo recording, which greatly enriches the experience.
Disc two of Acoustiphobia features experiments in sound from students of Boston's School of the Museum of Fine Arts. As a strictly student presentation, these twenty pieces reflect a cleverness and naiveté which is rare in recorded media. Found sounds, vocal passages, and heavily treated electronic tones trade off throughout these pieces. And with the rich diversity of approaches, the listener must shift gears every few minutes to adjust to a new style of composition". Nils Jacobson

Christian Marclay & Günter Müller - Live Improvisations (1994)

"All live improvisations should be this much fun. This live date between turntablist and electronic weirdmeister Christian Marclay and percussionist and electronics tinkerer Günter Müller is what the art of improvisation is supposed to be: fun, continually compelling textually, and inspired. While many intellectuals have made wild pronouncements about Marclay and his art -- and it is art, make no mistake -- writing all sorts of blather about how he strips the adult century bare by his cutting up of vinyl records and pasting them together with parts from other vinyl records, they never seem to mention that these sound collages of his are charming, very human, and quite often intentionally hilarious. When Marclay is paired with a mischievous percussionist like Müller, anything can happen and always does. Here, swathes of "beautiful music" from the likes of the Bert Kamphert Singers and Orchestra are layered against throbbing drum machines and slamming garbage can lids. There are snippets from the Wizard of Oz recordings, laid in swathes against thundering tom toms and shimmering cymbals, and then scratched against backwards recordings of "Diddy Wah Diddy" done by a bubblegum teen choir as sheets of glass shatter and the sounds of John Wayne movie gunshots punctuate the mix. Yeah, yeah. Marclay and Müller may sift through the detritus of dead cultural artifacts to make something new, but it's not to make a political statement -- it's because it sounds cool as hell".
